The HERoes Bruncheon was created by the HER Collective after acknowledging a need to celebrate Black women --- the everyday HERoes who are working to create REAL change within Richmond's Black community. Many women see and engage with local change-makers every day, but very few have opportunities to celebrate and honor them in a meaningful way. That’s why this year’s theme is Everyday HERoes.

During the 2019 HERoes Bruncheon, we will recognize and celebrate five women who are working to make Richmond a better place for future generations. Nominate your favorite HERo by October 7, 2019 here.

A true HERo demonstrates selflessness and her actions are guided by intention. Although smaller in scale or scope, her gestures significantly impact those around her in unanticipated ways. Whether providing a few neighborhood children with school supplies or driving a member of her community to routine appointments, these small ripples create major waves. The Small Deeds, Big Impact award honors the HERo who embodies sacrifice, empowerment, and love through modest, yet meaningful acts.

This HERo understands the significance of financial capital to sustain and uplift her community. It’s one thing to talk about or believe in creative solutions, but she solidifies her commitment through funding. This award goes to the woman who acts on what she claims by taking strategic, monetary risks to help secure our seats at the table.

With a heart for others, the Sister’s KeepHER remains in service to her fellow sister. She extends herself as a shoulder to cry on, a listening ear, or the accountability partner that lovingly keeps you in check—we all need one of those! This type of HERo isn’t honored enough, usually because their service isn't performative, but rather who they are at their core.

The journey to success is never taken alone. Every successful HERo has a tribe—both visible and invisible—championing her as she reaches greatness, and a true HERo pays it forward. She uses her access, resources, and experience to help equip the next wave of trailblazing women. It’s not a competition, not a race to the top. Our Lift as you Climb award goes to the woman who makes sure there are enough seats at the table for us all.

The Gamechanger knows that in order to get where we’ve never been, we must do what’s never been done. She brings new ideas, fresh perspectives, and a bold vision that pushes us all forward. The Gamechanger award goes to the HERo who isn’t afraid of uncharted territory; she knows greatness lies on the other side of our comfort zone, and is committed to taking new approaches to getting us there.
